Dan Behar’s is a frail and small voice lacking in classical strength, but powerful enough given its singular passion and vision - like Luke Haines, but without the checked aggression. Employing spacious arrangements and close-miking to lay claim to the contemporary vocabulary of alternative production, Behar's compositions nevertheless dip into the baroque wanderlust of mid-1970s Brian Eno, following winding paths into the unknown (just compare "My Favourite Year" to Eno's "Another Green World"). Offering texts rather than lyrics, his prosaic readings create a tension with the melodies beneath and yet carry the full force of poetic expression: internal rhymes and insistent, extended metaphors dominate the largely symbolist world of Behar. Light acoustic strumming, slow-burning guitar freak-outs, and a large variety of percussive strategies frame music that surges in waves, largely avoiding all-out attacks and the pure-pop statements of his famous employers, The New Pornographers. Fans of early Bowie should lap up Behar's intelligence and mastery of form, while appreciating the obsessive detailing he lavishes on each of these tracks.
